How the puzzles are made

Every puzzle here starts life as a real quote, not generated word soup — and every quote is handled the same honest way, start to finish. Here's exactly how.

Where the quotes come from

Every quote in the corpus is drawn from public-domain sources — full-text collections from authors whose work is confirmed public domain (Twain, Shakespeare, Wilde, Voltaire, and other pre-1929 writers), supplemented by Wikiquote's CC BY-SA-licensed, theme-organized collections. Nothing is scraped from a copyrighted book, a paid quote database, or another puzzle site.

Wikiquote itself aggregates from secondary sources and carries the occasional misattribution — the "Einstein didn't actually say that" problem is real. So before a quote ever reaches the corpus, its attribution is cross-checked against at least one source beyond the one it was pulled from. Anything that can't be corroborated is held back rather than published as fact.

How each puzzle is built

The mechanic is a classic monoalphabetic substitution cipher: every letter A–Z in the quote is swapped for a number 1–26, chosen fresh for each puzzle. A handful of letters start revealed as a foothold, and how many shrinks as you get sharper — the puzzle adapts to the player, not the other way round.

Nothing here is licensed, syndicated, or republished from anyone else's puzzle set — every cipher is generated from our own vetted quote corpus, on the fly, from scratch.

You won't solve the same quote twice

Playing as a guest gets you up to five puzzles a day, picked at random from the corpus. Create a free account and the daily cap disappears — and selection switches to no-repeat: once you've solved a quote, it's set aside for you until you've worked through the rest of the corpus. The corpus itself keeps growing, so that no-repeat window keeps getting longer.
